By Carla Bed Protector – A Review

Potty training is a big part of a toddlers life. A lot of focus is given to encouraging them to use the potty during the day and lots of advice etc can be found for this. But the hardest and often the longest stage of ‘being dry’ is for a toddler to be dry and use the toilet during the night. This is the time when the most accidents happen and getting up in the middle of the night to strip a wet bed is not much fun for anyone- particularly if one of the parents ends up having to sleep on the wet bed because toddler has decided to get in your bed!

We were lucky enough to try out the new bed protector from the By Carla range. It is a slightly padded waterproof mat that is placed under your child’s normal bed sheet.

Bed protector

The claims:

A By Carla bed protector is a great addition to any mattress. It will help to protect the mattress and body against night time wetness caused by bed wetting, leaky nappies or nursing mums.

Our two bed protectors have an extra soft top surface for comfort and a non sweat, waterproof and wipe-clean reverse for a comfortable night’s sleep. These thick and absorbent bed protectors will enhance night time dryness and breathability

What we liked:

  • nicely padded mat comfortable to lay on
  • washes well in washing machine
  • wide enough to cover width of bed (cot bed)

Would be even better if:

  • it was big enough to completely cover the mattress to ensure even wriggly toddlers’ beds are safe
  • it could be tumble dried for really quick drying
The Bed protector is £12.99 and available on Amazon

Dr Brown’s Natural Flow Trainer Cups–Review and Giveaway (closed)

In our quest to get Toby drinking milk in preparation for me returning to work we were sent some cups to try out from Dr Brown’s. We received two training cups, one with a soft spout which is aimed at babies from 6m+ and a similar one with a hard spout aimed at babies from 9m+.

We tried both as although Tony is not quite 9 months yet he quite likes to chew on  and play with a hard spout and we so far have had the most success with hard spouted cups.

The cups are both non drip cups as they have a valve in the spout which requires baby to suck in order to get the liquid from the cup. Toby has just started to cotton on to the idea that he can suck these spouts so we were off to a good start.

The cups are multiple coloured and so suitable for both boys and girls and are attractive to children. The handles are easy to hold and the spouts are smaller than many of the other cups on the market.

The claims:

  • Sip-Activated Valve – Only baby’s mouth activates valve, no mess when baby is not drinking.
  • All parts in Dr Brown’s Trainer Cup System are interchangeable (Handle,Spout,Valve)
  • Removable handles
  • Supplied with protective lid
  • Dishwasher safe – top rack only
  • BPA Free
  • Available in pink or blue

What we liked:

  • nice looking cups
  • small narrow teat so baby less inclined to chew
  • good quality easy to wash plastic
  • really don’t drip even when shaken

Would be even better if:

  • the cups could be used without the valves to allow them to double as a free flow cup for babies who aren’t great at sucking

On the whole we liked the cups and would recommend them. they are a good quality product and good value for money. The cups have a RRP of £5.10 and can be bought in a range of shops including Boots and online.

We are lucky enough to have one of each cup to give away to our readers.

All you need to do is like the Dr Brown’s uk facebook page and say The Scrummy Mummy sent you.

Then leave a comment below stating which cup you would like (soft spout or hard spout).

Babybjorn Eat and Play Smock : Review and Giveaway (closed)

On my quest for finding indoor play solutions, the lovely people at babybjorn suggested an Eat and Play Smock. At first I wondered why it was for both (yes I may sound a little dim.)

When it arrived I couldn’t believe how big it was, I was pleasantly suprised at how well it fitted both Caitlyn and Ellie. It is a great smock for Caitlyn when she is doing her arts and crafts and it’s great for Ellie when she is eating as it covers her and the high chair and she can’t get it off which she can with every single bib I have tried!

The claims

Their very own Babybjorn Eat and Play Smock (RRP £19.99) is made of waterproof, breathable material offering durable protection against spots and spills. The Babybjorn Eat and Play Smock can be just as useful at mealtimes as well as when your child is painting or giving you a hand in the kitchen. Long sleeves, comfortable elastic at the wrist and generous proportions give protection for the child both in the front and back. the fabric can be wiped clean or machine washed and is therefore a convenient addition to craft sessions with toddlers. The Babybjorn Eat and Play Smock is available in two bold colours; pink and blue helping make play time fun!

What we like

  • Fits both my girls well
  • Wipe clean
  • Not easy to pull off
  • Both my girls are happy to wear it without moaning
  • Nice and light

What we weren’t so keen on

  • Price it costs around £20 (although I have found it on the net for £13 which isn’t as bad)

Overall we liked the Babybjorn Eat and Play Smock mainly as I can use it for a variety of activities.

Koeka Venice Shawl–A Review and Giveaway by Toby and Daddy (closed)

Toby and his daddy have been loving doing their product reviews during their daily bath time. One of the most difficult thing about bath time is actually getting baby out of the bath when they are a wet wriggly slippery worm! This can be particularly nerve wracking for dads who are nervous about bathing baby (although Toby’s daddy is now a pro!) and so a product that aims to make this part of bathing easier is definitely worth a try!

Koeka Venice Shawl towel - fuschia - product

We were lucky to be sent a Koeka Venice Shawl baby towel. I was interested to try this with Daddy as it seemed like such a sensible invention – if you can reduce baby’s movement by keeping their legs in one place then it should make carrying them easier and I really think the towel was pretty good at making carrying a wet Toby easier.

The claims

Sometimes nature knows best.  With this in mind, the Koeka Venice Shawl Baby Bath Towel borrows one of nature’s best designs – the kangaroo pouch – and translates it into a novel design feature that creates the ultimate cosy and cocooned environment for b a baby to enjoy after their bath and the optimum secure and safe carrying experience for their parents.

The innovative Venice Shawl towel is star shaped with a hooded head and giant kangaroo pocket at the base.  These ingenious twists on the classic baby bath towel give some unique benefits.
Unique product benefits

·         The hooded head ensures that baby’s head – the part of the body that loses most heat – stays warm and protected after a bath

·         The wide star shaped side flaps lie one on top of each other over the baby to create an instant cocoon of cosiness that babies’ relish after their bath

·         While the giant kangaroo pouch ensures that baby can be as snug as a joey with their feet tucked in reassuring warmth and dryness, rather than left dangling outside of the towel to get cold.  The ingenious kangaroo pouch also helps ‘anchor’ baby in a secure position.  This helps younger babies feel secure in their parents arms and helps stop older, stronger babies from wriggle in their parents arms which when wet can be dangerous

What we liked:

  • less movement when baby tightly wrapped so easier to carry
  • also good for swimming when carrying baby from pool to changing room
  • towel had a good absorbency
  • good for nervous dads

Would be even better if:

  • it came in different sizes as Toby fitted perfectly in the head and feet pouches but the wraparound bits weren’t quite big enough to completely cover him and make him warm and snuggly.

E45 Derma Restore – A Review and Giveaway (closed)

We have been looking at lots of products for looking after baby but what about mummy? In the time consuming world of being a mum it is far too easy to lose sight of the need to take time out to care for yourself. One of the areas that often needs special attention is your skin. It’s the biggest organ in your body and does require attention! I have particularly dry sensitive skin particularly on my face and upper arms which recently has been pretty bad.
We were lucky to receive a bottle of E45 Derma Restore to review. I’m not very good at sticking to a routine of applying moisturiser but tried to apply some routinely to give this product a good try.

picture 38992
The claims:

. E45 Endless Moisture Derma Restore has been specially formulated to nourish mature skin and promises softer, more supple and glowing skin in just 3 weeks. This is great news for mums who may not have much time to get their skin looking bikini ready prior to their summer holiday.

Each bottle of E45 Endless Moisture Derma Restore contains the following specially selected ingredients, which help to combat the results of aging skin, such as loss of elasticity and suppleness:

·         Nicotinamide, a form of Vitamin B3, has been proven to boost collagen production
·         Poly Hydroxy Acid (PHA) delivers all the skin-smoothing and anti-ageing benefits of AHAs, without any of the irritation
·         Glycerin is the natural moisture magnet

PHA is commonly found in high end anti-aging face creams, but this is the first time it has been included in a body moisturiser, so at just £4.59, it’s a real beauty bargain!

I have been using the cream regularly for a few weeks and have been pleased with the results. You can see an obvious improvement in the appearance of the skin and it feels much less tight and sore.
I am not yet (well I like to think so at least!) in the mature group but nana cez had been trying the cream too and likes it. In fact she won’t give it back. The cream has a nice consistency and a delicate fragrance. It rubs in easily and is absorbed quickly which is an advantage for a busy mum and nana alike!

I think the cream is good value for money and would buy it again.

Buggy Tug Review by Cliodhna and Dylan

When I was asked to review this product I have to admit it was never anything I had thought about needing. Since Dylan was born I have walked A LOT, including up and down some pretty impressive hills, so I guess I was a good person to try the Buggy Tug out.

At first, I found it irritating because I thought I’d have to unhook my hand just to scratch my nose or fix my hair (how vein do I sound?!). However after awhile, I realised the stretch length is actually long enough to let you do bits and bobs and your hand does slip out relatively easily – when you want it to of course. So in terms of practicalities it was a lot better than I initially thought.

As I said, I had never really considered a need for it. I do my best not to push Dylan out into the middle of the road and generally try not to let him freewheel down hills. Strangely though, as I used the Buggy Tug, I noticed that sometimes when I’m waiting at lights I do actually loosen my grip and from time to time I’m not as switched on as I think I am.

Obviously not wanting to use Dylan as a crash test dummy, I couldn’t fully test what the Buggy Tug would do if I did loose grip on the hill. My imagination suggests (especially in his two handle buggy) that it would topple the buggy over and probably me with it but at least he would be close to me.

All in all, the Buggy Tug does exactly what it claims to do and does it well. It’s up to you to decide whether you feel the need for that extra level of safety!

What it claims:

Protect you and your pram from becoming separated

Suitable for both single and bar handed prams.

We we liked:

  • Comfortable fabric
  • Easy to use
  • Quite discrete
  • Keeps you attached to the buggy

Would be better:

  • Needs a bit of a rethink of two handled prams – I’m not sure I’d trust it.

  • Its a great way to learn colours and shapes

Earth Friendly Diaper Cream and Diaper Bags with a Giveaway (closed)

I had the opportunity to try the eco-friendly Earth Friendly Diaper Cream and Diaper Bags.

Ellie has been suffering terribly from nappy rash so this product came in really handy. It comes in a tube which I like as feel that it is more hygienic that way. I used it with each nappy change and while her nappy rash was really bad use it and left it without a nappy on, the only trouble with it being a cream is that it did rub of onto the carpet.

Organic Red Clover Diaper Care Cream

Caitlyn also likes using it on her bum even though she is potty trained, she says it leaves it feeling nice and soft!

The claims:

This pretty plant is one of the most useful remedies for babies/ children with skin problems.
A natural anti-inflammatory, red clover (Trifolium pratense) may be used effectively in all kinds of instances of baby/childhood skin problems, and is of great value in treating the good old, common nappy rash. earth friendly baby’s Natural Red Clover Nappy Care Cream was carefully designed to provide quick and effective relief from nappy discomfort and minor skin irritations, as well as seal out wetness to avoid further irritation. Botanical extracts of red clover have been combined with zinc oxide to bring you this wonderful, gentle, natural cream, which will go far in helping to protect Baby’s lovely skin and promote healing when healing is needed. This product is unscented, and has been clinically tested and proven to be hypoallergenic. This product is also available in two convenient sizes: a 1 1/2 ounce (43g) travel/baby bag convenience tube, and a larger 4 ounce (113g) bed-side tube.

What we liked:

  • It is easy to squeeze out of the tube
  • More hygienic than a tub
  • It doesn’t have a smell that I have noticed unlike a lot of other nappy creams
  • It spreads easily onto the skin
  • Is a good price

What could be better:

  • The tube looks like a toothpaste tube which confused Caitlyn

Eco Diaper Bag Review

Sara and Toby have been testing the eco diaper bags.

Eco Diaper Nappy Bags

Sara loved the bags as she uses a nappy bag at every nappy change.

The claims

As you would expect, they are 100% degradable and leave no harmful residues. They are an ideal size to hold soiled nappies and have tie handles for ease of use.
- perforated roll of 50 sacks
- tie handles for easy use
- 100% degradable
- no harmful residues
- handy size
- unfragranced
Each roll has 50 sacks.

What we liked:

  • Held in the smell really well
  • Nice quality
  • Feels you are helping the earth in a small way
  • Easy to tear off the roll

What could be better:

  • Compared to other nappy bags they are more pricey
  • One niggle we have is that even though the bags are 100% degradable, disposable nappies are not so it does seem strange to put them in a degradable bag.

We love Earth Friendly Baby products check out our other reviews here.

We have 3 Diaper Creams up for grabs.
